Change Your Focus, Change Your Reality
April 30, 2008
Article Title: Change Your Focus, Change Your Reality By: Michael Richard Hands, MA In life, we do not necessarily get what we want or desire. We get what we focus on. Winners and high achievers in every field know this and actively cultivate the most positive mental focus possible. Simply put: whatever you focus on expands. In this way, you and I create our own reality each and every day. Two people can go through the very same life situation, yet how they experience it can differ greatly. One might mentally focus on how misfortunate they are or why this event will ruin their life. The other might focus on how they can use this event to become a stronger person or how it can become a valuable stepping stone to new possibilities. Which one is right? Experience reveals, they both are. Each will likely get what they focus on; they each are co-creators of their own destiny. How can you instantly change your focus and turn it into a powerful force for good in your life? Through the use of powerful questions. When it comes to establishing a powerful focus, questions are the answer! "He who asks questions cannot avoid the answers." -- Cameroon Proverb The brain is a very powerful answer seeking computer. Using a wealth of resources, your brain will generate answers for any question you put before it. It truly is an amazing process! But there is a potential problem here. Ask a poor question, your brain will begin to generate answers to it that donot serve your highest interest. It will give you a lousy focus. Here's an example. What do you think will happen if upon waking up each morning you ask yourself, "What is the worst thing that could happen to me today? (If you really want to know, ask yourself this question now.) And lo and behold, see what begins to happen. Just by asking this question your brain's focus changes to construct possible answers to this questions. As your mental focus shifts, so does your awareness. You begin to notice a whole different set of realities in your environment. Your recall of particular memories shifts; you begin to remember incidents from your past that you would not have had you not asked that question. In short, your inner experience shifts powerfully based on the mental question you asked. As your inner focus shifts, you create a different set of emotions. Likewise, you behavior changes as well. Keep a negative or problem oriented focus long enough, you'll create an entire life story based upon it in no time at all. Your focus shapes your reality and can limit or enhance your potential. Now what if you began each day asking yourself a series of questions like these: 1. What am I happy about in my life right now? 2. What am I excited about in my life right now? 3. What am I grateful about in my life right now? 4. What am I enjoying in my life right now? 5. What am I committed to in my life right now? Taking 1 minute each morning to mentally contemplate these questions will create an extremely positive focus. Add the power of visualization to this exercise and you have a tremendously valuable meditation practice. To instantly change your focus, change the quesiton you're asking. To do this well, you must become aware of your fundamental or core life questions. Some journaling and reflection is called for here. It is well worth it. Learn to change your focus and you will have the key to changing your reality. Questions are the laser of human consciousness. They concentrate our focus and determine what we feel and do. Let me conclude by sharing something Deepak Chopra told me during a training I took with him several years ago. The topic was growing spiritually. Dr. Chopra suggested that one powerful way we could instantly change our spiritual destiny was to change our fundamental life questions away from "what's in it for me?" and adopt one of "how can I help?" How could your life, relationships, and career change if you shifted to a "how can I help" perspective? I challenge you to find out for yourself.
